Example of camera shots and angles
Camera shots, angles and movements
Camera Shots
Long shot (LS) : Shot which shows you most of the fairly large subject,
for example a person and usually much of the surroundings.
Extreme Long shot (ELS): Camera is at
its furthest distance from the subject, emphasizing the background.
Establishing shot: Opening shot or
sequence, tells us where it is happening and it usually opens the scene (setting).
Medium shot: This shot is waist up to the head of the subject.
Close up shot: Close up of the subject, usually a face.
Extreme close up: A very zoomed in frame
usually emphasising a feature of a face e.g.- an eye.
Two shots: When there are relationships with two subject. For example
when two people are side by side and they are walking towards the camera. They
usually have equal space between them.
Point of view shot: In a film it shows what the character is
looking at. This is done to show
a subjects point of
view.
Camera angles
Camera angles
The direction
and the height of the shot, for example if you use a high
shot (facing down at the
subject) it could represent vulnerability.
A low angle shot can show the subjects superiority and an over head shot is a very high positioned camera showing action (camera facing up at the subject).

Camera Movement
Master shot: This is
when you can see everything directly in front of you.
Panning shot: This is
when the camera moves slowly across the set from one side to the other from a
fixed angle.
Tilt: This is when the camera it
tilted from the subjects point of view.
Crane shot: This
is when the camera is on a
crane and it moves around above
the set and films everything
from above .
Tracking shot or Dolly shot: This is when the camera
follows the subject everywhere, for example the camera is following the subject
running in a scene.
Zoom:
when a camera moves
toward the subject to show a close up.
I have created a this mood board which shows my inspirations and ideas about what the music video will be based on and what concept I want it to be about.
Many of my ideas revolve around a dark, gothic fantasy
like the movie ‘Twilight’, ‘Van Helsing’,
‘Hansel & Gretel’ and etc. This is because I personally enjoy this genre as
well as this genre’s being really popular amongst my target audience group
which is teenager up to 19. I think this genre is popular amongst teenagers as
this is something different and original which makes it more entertaining,
amusing and always drawn to it as you don’t know what's going to happen,
whereas in a reality based movie/video it can be very cliché and predictable.
I am also inspired by horror movies as the element of
shock in this genre is very enticing and exciting for the viewers, therefore I
want to surprise and use some elements of a horror movie in my music video.
Also many recent horror movies used the element where they lead the audience to
believe the cliché will happen, such as the ‘ghost’ will pop up with the use of
the sound track building up or the movement of the camera representing what an
actor see’s, but then something else happens which keeps the audience guessing
and anticipating. As a result, I want to use the element of shock and also make
it unpredictable.
I also like the concepts of these music videos; Michel
Jackson –Thriller and Timberland- Morning after dark. I like both of these as
they use the dark fantasy concept using characters such as: zombies, ghost,
vampires and etc. This makes the video very entertaining as it is like a movie.
Unlike ordinary music video which usually portray some sort of love story,
these video’s are like a short movie using an abstract form. As the video
‘Thriller’ used the theme fantasy/horror first in a music video, it made it
really popular and very well-known globally. Therefore, having a concept like
this will make my music video different which would make more people want to
watch it.
Audience Research analysis
This
video shows the decisions we have made as a group regarding the results we have
got from 30+ people who completed our survey.
I
also have found out that multiple choice was easier for the viewers to answer
as the open question answers were very vague and not as helpful. Therefore, if
I do make another survey in the future, I will make sure it consists of mainly
multiple choice questions.
Audience Research Survey
Audience Research Survey
As a group we have created a survey on ‘surveymonkey’ for our audience research. The results will then help us reach decisions about how we will create our music video and what it will consists. For example: type (genre) of song, camerawork, storyline and etc.
